Fair pay & better service

Why Fair Pay and Better Service Matter in London’s Courier Industry

London courier driver providing reliable same-day delivery for Rapide Logistics

The way we receive parcels has changed dramatically. Businesses and customers now expect deliveries to be fast, reliable and affordable, with same-day and next-day delivery becoming increasingly common.

But behind every delivery is a driver.

And at Rapide Logistics, we believe it's important that the people responsible for getting those parcels safely to their destination are not forgotten.

The pressure behind cheap deliveries

The UK parcel industry is enormous. Around 4.2 billion parcels were handled in 2024–25, showing just how much the country relies on delivery drivers and logistics companies.

But as competition increases, there can be significant pressure on delivery companies to keep prices low.

For large operators, scale can make this possible. For smaller logistics businesses, competing purely on price can be extremely difficult.

At the same time, drivers can find themselves under increasing pressure to complete large numbers of deliveries within tight timeframes.

Recent research from Citizens Advice found that 55% of delivery drivers surveyed were paid per parcel, while delivery targets ranged from 4 to 50 parcels per hour, with an average target of 19 parcels per hour. That's roughly one delivery every three minutes.

Even more importantly, 76% of the drivers surveyed said pressure to deliver quickly made it difficult to provide good customer service.

For us at Rapide Logistics, that raises an important question:

Can a courier service remain genuinely reliable if the driver is under constant pressure to deliver as quickly as possible?

When the cheapest delivery isn't always the best value

We understand that price matters.

We're a small, growing London logistics business ourselves, so we know that businesses need to control their costs.

But we also believe there is a difference between being competitive on price and simply trying to be the cheapest.

A delivery price reflects more than the distance between two postcodes.

It reflects the driver, the vehicle, fuel, insurance, traffic, parking, waiting time, loading and unloading, customer communication and the responsibility of getting the parcel where it needs to go.

Cutting costs at every stage can eventually put pressure on the people actually carrying out the work.

And when drivers are under pressure, the customer can feel the consequences.

Ofcom reported in 2025 that 68% of people had experienced a delivery issue during the previous six months, including delays and problems with how parcels were delivered.

That doesn't mean every delivery problem is caused by driver pay. London's traffic, incorrect addresses, weather, parking restrictions, technology and high parcel volumes can all play a part.

But it does show why quality and working conditions deserve to be part of the conversation.

Why Rapide Logistics takes a different approach

This is where Rapide Logistics comes in.

We're a London-based courier company focused on same-day, urgent and time-sensitive deliveries across London and within the M25.

We're not trying to build a business based purely on delivering the maximum number of parcels possible.

We're building a courier service around reliability, communication and personal service.

Our customers aren't just a delivery number.

Whether we're moving an urgent business document across Central London, delivering a parcel to a customer in South London, supporting a pharmacy with a time-sensitive delivery or moving goods between businesses, we understand that every delivery has a reason behind it.

Fair pay, fair use and better service

One of the things that matters to us at Rapide Logistics is fair use and fair pay for drivers.

We believe drivers should be properly valued for the work they do.

A courier driver has to deal with London's roads, traffic, parking restrictions, loading bays, customer requirements and unexpected delays. They're responsible for the final part of the journey — often the part that matters most to the customer.

We don't believe that constantly pushing drivers to do more deliveries in less time is necessarily the best way to create a reliable service.

Our aim is to build a model where drivers can do their jobs properly while customers receive the level of service they expect.

For us, fairer treatment of drivers and better customer service go hand in hand.

Why this matters particularly in London

London is one of the most challenging places in the UK to operate a courier service.

A journey that looks short on a map can take considerably longer because of congestion, road restrictions, parking, traffic management and busy commercial areas.

That's why local knowledge matters.

At Rapide Logistics, our focus is London.

We provide courier solutions across Central, North, South, East and West London, as well as within the M25.

Being London-focused means we can concentrate on understanding the challenges businesses and customers face when moving parcels around the capital. Explore all of our London locations for local coverage details.

Supporting London's businesses

Our customers range from individuals who need an urgent parcel delivered to businesses that rely on regular courier services.

We can help with:

Our goal is simple: make the delivery process easier for our customers.

That's why we're developing our service around straightforward quotations, clear communication and flexible courier solutions — including trade accounts for regular business customers.

Small doesn't mean less professional

Being a smaller logistics company doesn't mean we can't provide a professional service.

In fact, being smaller gives us an opportunity to do something that can become difficult in very large organisations: know our customers and care about the individual delivery.

We can listen to what a customer actually needs rather than simply fitting every delivery into the same process.

That's particularly valuable when a delivery is urgent or doesn't fit neatly into a standard courier model.

Building a different kind of London courier company

Rapide Logistics is still growing.

We're not pretending to be the biggest courier company in London.

We're focused on building something sustainable — a courier business where customers receive reliable service and drivers are treated fairly.

We believe there is a place in London's logistics industry for businesses that compete through service, reliability and relationships, not simply through the lowest possible price.

Because ultimately, a courier isn't just transporting a parcel.

We're transporting something that somebody is waiting for.

And that matters.
